Collecting Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like loose diamonds or loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. Many people have a great love of the various gemstones found worldwide today. Read long as we discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this interesting hobby.

To start off right you need to read up on the wide variety of stones available. You'll find it very helpful to know what you're buying and prevent you from making mistakes. Get the answer to questions like how, where and what to buy.

First, color is a major part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its pure spectral color the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Gemstones colors that are darker or paler are considered a lower value.

Stone cut is the second most important factor to look at before a purchase is made. The precision of cut is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much someone will pay for it.

Another factor to look at is the clarity. This means the stones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different in prices as well. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference in specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people loved to spend weekends to go hunting for raw gemstones. Just in the United States in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or check out the quartz regions in Mt Hope or Inverell, New South Wales.

. A gemstone is for your enjoyment. If you think it is beautiful and it makes
you happy or it reminds you of someone you love or something special in your
life, it is very valuable. Gemstones are very old, sometimes millions of years
old: they can be powerful energetically and emotionally so it is important to
choose the gemstones that you feel drawn to and connected to, even if its not
so rare or expensive. For example, many people love dark blue sapphires: they
seem deep and mysterious. People with such taste are in luck because the stones

There are three types of gemstones: Natural, Synthetic, and Simulant. Natural
gemstones include minerals and organic materials such as emeralds, rubies,
sapphires, amber, coral, fossil, ivory, cultured freshwater pearls and natural
saltwater pearls. Synthetic and Simulant are terms used by the USBM for
