Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

The very first step in beginning this hobby the intelligent way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you can find books on the subject that will make you an informed buyer.

Color is a very important part in the value of the stone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors include violent, blue, green,, orange and red. Colors that are darker or palerthan a pure color diminish the value of the stone.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones in general as well. A precision cut will highlight the gemstone's color, diminishes its inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One way to determine the precision of the cut of the stone is to consider how evenly it reflects light over the stones complete surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting internally. Gem color appears washed out.

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone under consideration. This is talking about the purity of the gemstone or the absence of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Gemstones are often listed according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be of the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, loose gemstones are great for collecting. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are simply too big and fragile for use in jewelry. Look at each stone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. And if you travel to Canada you will find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec and even hessonite garnet in Asbestos, Quebec. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

Proportion refers to the angles and relative measurements of a polished diamond.
More than any other feature, proportions determine a diamond's optical
properties. Studies have shown that table size, crown angle, and pavilion depth
have a dramatic effect on a diamond's appearance. Symmetry is a grading term for
the exactness of shape and placement of facets. Variations in symmetry include
off-center culets and tables, poor facet alignment, misshapen facets, out-of-
round girdles, and wavy girdles.

The precious opal has a unique internal structure. It is made up of spheres that
are closely packed in layers that eventually form something that looks like a
four-sided triangle or a hexagon. They are made up of silica that allows light
to pass through the structure like a prism to produce internal colors, and it
also determines the quality of the stone. A precious opal has a doublet which is
a colorful material laid on a black backing of ironstone, basalt or obsidian.
This causes "a play of color" which produces a spectrum of different colors.
