Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the wide array of gemstones found worldwide today. This article will discuss a number of things you need to know in starting in this hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to learn everything there is to know about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You need to be as informed as possible.

First, color is a major part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer the color comes to its purer spectral value the more valuable the stone becomes. Remember that the spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that are darker or paler diminish the value of the stone.

The cut of the gemstone is an important aspect to consider in determining gemstone value. The gemstone must be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. Color tone, saturation, and hue will always appear inconsistent

The next factor to consider is the clarity of the gemstone. This means the purity of the stone or the absence of internal inclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Another consideration is the duo of size and weight. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not equal for each and every stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a sapphire of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite stone would be about 1.23 carats.

Although gemstones are normally used for jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gems that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Look at each loose gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unusual nature and for the craftsmanship of the artisan who shaped it. And unlike some hobbies that require you to pay for your specimens you can find your raw materials through field trips In the US in Wyoming you can find Agate (including Moss Agate), Jade, Ruby, Jasper, Bloodstone as well as Star Sapphire. And if you travel to Canada you will find rhodonite at various locations in British Columbia or labradorite on Tabor Island, and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

Amethyst is also considered sacred in Buddhism. Purple is a color long associated with royalty so it is no surprise that kings and queens have long loved Amethyst. Its use can be traced back to the Minoan period in Greece (2500 B.C.), and at one time the scarcity of this gem made it almost as valuable as diamonds.

The Halley's Comet Opal is the largest uncut black opal in the world, according
to the Guinness Book of World Records. It is so named because it was unearthed
in 1986, a year when Halley's Comet could be seen from Earth. It is the third
largest gem grade black opal ever recorded, the largest one extant, and the
largest specimen ever found in its region. It was found at Lightning Ridge in
Australia by the Lunatic Hill Mining Syndicate. It weighs 1982.5 carats and is
about the size of a man's fist. The Halley's Comet Opal a very fine specimen of
an opal, with few flaws or blemishes and a large green and orange 1.6 cm thick
color bar which goes through the opal. Formed about 20 million years ago, it is
an example of a nobby, which is a natural lump-shaped opal found only at
Lightning Ridge. Currently it is for sale at $1.2 million.
