How To Start Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

The term gemology refers to the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating items like loose gemstone or natural diamonds. You'll even find some that like to visit various locations close by or possibly even in other countries to look for raw gemstones. Some of them will even tumble or finish off the gemstones themselves. If this sounds like a hobby you would like to get involved in read along as we discuss the various aspects of gemstone collecting.

To begin with your first priority is to get yourself some reading material. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you learn about each kind of gemstone the better off you'll be. You need to be as informed as possible.

First on your list to factor in should be stone color. You want the stone to be as close as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices for very pale or very dark precious and semi precious gemstones are less per carat.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors into appraisal of diamonds but gemstones as well. A good cut showcases the gemstone's color, lessen any inclusions and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent method to determine the precision of the cut is to consider if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level over its entire surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out rather than reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.

Next to look at is gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Next thing to look at is the duo of size and weight. Due to the fact gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then an equal sized Sapphire would weigh more than 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite would be about 1.23 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can give you an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Just in the United States in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Torrington, New South Wales, Australia or check out raw material in the peridot fields in Chudleigh Park, Queensland, Australia.
