Starting To Collect Loose Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting various loose gemstones or loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They simply love the beauty and the colors of the wide array of gemstones found worldwide today. This article will look at a number of factors you should understand in starting in this interesting hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand everything there is to know about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.

The first item to take into account is gemstone color. You want the stone to be as close in color as possible to the pure spectrum colors. This means red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark precious and semi precious gemstones are lower than the vibrant colors.

Gemstone cut is the second most important factor to look at. How precise the cut is will determine how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and how much it will be valued.

Next up is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone. Normally large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with others needing to be magnified 10X

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference of relative density or specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting gemstones as a hobby can give you an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. For example in North Carolina you can find Beryl, Aquamarine, Emerald, Almandite Garnet, Rhodolite, and Pyrope Garnet, Diamond, Cyanitecomma

within the quartz. Because agate is porous, it is often dyed to darken or change
its natural color. Commonly treated agate is sold as Black Onyx. Petrified wood

to avoid it being scratched by other pieces of jewelry. Amber has been imitated
by glass, plastic, synthetic resin and other natural resins. Amber is commonly
